Fantasy is one genre I will always love and always be drawn to. It takes up a lot of my 'library'. You can't really get more fictional than a make-believe world and sometimes for me it is the best escape to pretend you are in another world entirely. Which is exactly why I choose the book I did for our next book club read.

The book: Lightlark by Alex Aster.

I had previously seen this book a lot on social media and once I had read the blub online, I knew it was a book I would want to read at some point so it was added to the list of possibles for the book club.

Our meeting place this time had us chilling at mine.

Book Stats

Title: Lightlark

Author: Alex Aster

Rating (in books not stars): 4.5/5

Book in three words: shocking, eventful, dark

Book in one sentence: A different fantasy novel with heartfelt romantic moments that has a an unexpected and explosive ending.

Thoughts

At the beginning of the book there were a lot of unanswered questions for me and when all the characters met at the beginning it reminded me of the Hunger Games.

Grim was definitely a favourite character of mine - he is that typical bad (but good) fantasy guy and he is definitely on my book boyfriend list. In a way he reminds me of Rhysand from ACOTAR (another character on my book boyfriend list). I also loved the interactions between Grim and the main character Isla.

There were a couple of characters I didn't like and was suspicious of - I won't say who to avoid potential spoilers - but I see that as a good thing. For a fantasy novel you definitely need characters on both sides.

The ending for me was completely unexpected - I again can't say why because it would spoil it - and there's an unanswered question right at the end which I love because it is the perfect cliff hanger to make you want to read the next book.

Would I Recommend the Book?

Absolutely! If you love fantasy then do give this a try!

Would I reread it?

Definitely! Especially as it is a series, I really want to read the whole series so it is likely I would reread this before delving into the rest to keep the story fresh in my head.

Over to You

Have you read Lightlark? What were your thoughts?

In the next book club post, I will be discussing the book The Thirty Before Thirty List by Tasneem Abdur-Rashid.
